Michigan Technological University was founded in the year 1885 as a public research university. Today, the university still has a number of STEM-forward degree offerings, as well as a rich history of offering enterprise experience for students in any major prior to graduation. The average net cost of Michigan Tech is $17,814. In-state tuition is around $15,900 and out-of-state students is $35,200 without financial assistance of any kind. The higher price tag can be associated with STEM-related costs and small classes. At Michigan Technological University, students gain a wealth of knowledge, as well as enterprise experience and entrepreneurship exposure. The senior design projects in engineering are sponsored by industry businesses at a rate of 70%. MTU faculty provide mentoring, guidance, and coaching for the projects. It is possible to select an enterprise business or a manufacturing initiative project. The idea is for students to experience more of a business setting rather than a classroom feel.
Academically, the ratio of professors to students is 1:13. The small classes are ideal for a more impactful learning environment. Students can select from over 120 degree programs in business, computing, engineering, sciences, arts, and forest resources and environmental science. Minors, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, post-degree certificates, master’s degrees, graduate certificates, and PhDs are also available. The Pavlis Honors College offers a global community development partnership minor and an enterprise minor.
Degrees are available online at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. All degrees are STEM-based to some extent. Courses are designed to challenge students intellectually, to create a mentality of design thinking, and to produce leaders. Many classrooms are equipped to support a bring-your-own-device, interactive, and engaging experience. The school has a dedicated makerspace for innovation and collaboration and students have access to 20 research centers and institutions.
Michigan Tech has an 84% retention rate alongside a 70% graduation rate after six years. The retention rate is impressive given the advanced level of education, and the lower graduation rate after four years of 34% is to be expected for the same reason. High school students have the option of dual enrollment, which means talented young people can take both college courses and high school classes at the same time.
